I drew a lot as a child and my mother, in her own special motherly way, strongly urged me to take art classes in high school. My father also painted—not professionally, but I do remember seeing some of his paintings when I was a child.
What do you draw inspiration from? Which artists inspire you?
I find inspiration in the things and people around me. My favorite artist would be Vincent Van Gogh for his life story and amazing use of color. I also refer to the work of Peter de Seve for not only his amazing design and drawing style, but his incredible technique for combining watercolor with pen and ink. I also look to Mary Engelbreit for her impressive presence in the licensing field.
I have a degree in commercial art from the University of St. Francis in my hometown of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
How would you describe your signature style?
I guess I might consider myself an impressionistic watercolor painter. Maybe even a humorous illustrator. I hope the viewer will enjoy my artwork, maybe bring a smile to their day. I enjoy pushing colors and see how they interact. Watercolor provides a unique way of mixing color on the paper that provides some interesting results. I have begun working with gum arabic powder, which I find adds some interesting effects to the paint. I also work with colored pencil, acrylics, and pen and ink, as well as digitally using Painter, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Who’s your go-to person for providing honest feedback on your work?
The wonderful staff at Painted Planet Licensing and my family. I have found that my daughters (who are much more creative than I am) are usually not afraid to tell me what they really think. My wife has her own special way to let me know a piece may need more work.
Describe your studio.
I work in our home and my studio is relatively small. I have a cluttered L-shaped desk for my computer, which acts as an occasional mid-afternoon nap spot for our cat. Behind my desk is my drawing table where I paint. There are bookshelves with a number of art books, sketchbooks, and magazines along with a 5-drawer file cabinet where I store my paintings and watercolor board. I am fortunate to have a large window for some natural light.
To grow my licensing business where I can create successful lines for a wide range of products. Then I would be able to focus on and explore a particular subject matter. I want to become a better painter and storyteller so that I can better get what is in my brain down in paint.
What is your dream project?
Creating a product line based on my own ideas… hopefully with a beach/coastal theme, which would enable us to move to the beach where I would never be cold again.
What is your favorite color?
Cobalt blue. Don’t know why, just is… at least for today.
If you were not an artist what would you do?
I did have a 16-year career as a visual journalist/designer in newspapers, which allowed me to collaborate with writers and photographers. So I spent a lot of time storytelling. I like to be informed and help inform others. I would love to work in some capacity at a college or university. So a particular career? Not sure…guess I’ve been spending too much time trying to become an artist.
What are your hobbies (besides art)?
I enjoy reading and being outside. I am working hard at my golf game with a goal of sometime being able to score lower than our daughters (there is still a lot of work to do!). I enjoy bike riding and inline skating. Being a certified scuba diver, I love being at the beach when we have the opportunity. I mainly enjoy being with my family. I am blessed with a wonderful wife and two marvelous daughters.
